English tests

A simple guide

This is a simple guide to the nine most common internationally recognised English language tests and examinations.

To simplify English language scales across the many tests and examinations available, an internationally recognised framework has been developed. It is called the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) for reading, writing, listening and speaking.

CEFR is split into the following six levels:

A1: elementary
A2: lower intermediate

B1:  intermediate
B2: higher intermediate

C1: advanced
C2 proficiency

UK Visas & Immigration tests
